Flora of Spain

There are about 8,000 plants in Spain, many of which grow in this region alone. Vast forests once grew here. Tarragona, a province of Catalonia, was once a solid forest. Now there are few of them left and you can meet representatives of the flora, mainly only in the northern part of the peninsula, more often it is elm, oak, beech, chestnut, linden, ash. Pine and spruce trees predominate in the mountainous area, and even higher in the mountains alpine meadows begin.

The Cantabrian and Galician mountains are called "green" Spain because they have the richest flora. In the southern and eastern parts of the country there are many trees native to North Africa, coconuts, dates, citrus fruits and olives.

The flora of the Canary Islands is striking in its diversity. Tenerife is covered with lush greenery and plantations of agricultural plants, and thanks to eucalyptus, the air even in urban centers looks fresh. Among the trees should be noted the dragon tree and the Canary laurel, they grow only in the Canary Islands, elsewhere have long since disappeared, and the dragon tree has even become a symbol of the archipelago. The resin of this tree in the fresh air acquires a red hue, hence the name, and also has healing properties.

The flowers deserve special mention in the Canary Islands; they are the pride of the local flora and just extraordinary beauty. One of them, strelitzia, also called a bird of paradise, in addition to its beauty, is also known for the fact that it does not fade for a long time and many tourists take it with them. Here, in abundance different species of cacti, and in the mountains grows a unique canary pine, which somehow manages to survive even on volcanic rock. Interestingly, even if the trunk is 80% damaged by fire, the tree will still come to life. As a building material, it is quite durable and expensive.

Fauna of Spain

The fauna of the region is quite diverse. The northern part is typical of Central Europe, there are many wild boars and deer, and sport hunting is allowed even for deer. In the Cantabria and Leon mountains, the brown bear is quite rare, few foxes and wolves remain, and you can still find the Spanish lynx near Guadalchi Vir. Higher up in the mountain there is a red deer, which is also allowed to hunt, and a mountain goat. There is only one place in Europe where the monkey(maggot) meets - near Gibraltar.

The country ranks first in Europe in the diversity of bird fauna. Only around the predators there are about 25 species(hawks, falcons, eagles and others). Some species come here only for wintering. Waterfowl feel at ease here, herons, storks, flamingos, geese and others live here in large colonies. Thanks to the hot climate, reptiles also feel good here, there are snakes, lizards and even chameleons. The main representative of the fauna in the Atlantic Ocean is sardines; cod, Baltic herring and all types of molluscs are found in smaller quantities. The predominant fauna of the Mediterranean is tuna, sprats, salmon, crustaceans.

The fauna of the Canary Islands is represented mainly by domestic animals, sheep, pigs, goats, cows and others. Pack animals such as horses, camels and donkeys are imported from the mainland. Among the wild mammals we can mention, perhaps, the mouflons living in the Teide National Park. The most common bird, as you can guess from the name of the islands, is the canary. As early as the 18th century, thanks to its pleasant singing, it was highly valued in Europe and so many of them were brought to the islands that they gave the name to the archipelago.

Free time

Most Spanish resorts offer their guests, in addition to a beach holiday, a wide range of outdoor activities, depending on the location of the resort. Costa Blanca is a large Spanish tourist center with developed educational, ecological, cultural and sports tourism. The Costa Brava is a resort that is attractive mainly for lovers of windsurfing, water skiing and sailing. You can also go paragliding, jet skiing and diving here. Several water parks located in the coastal area offer many water attractions for children and adults.

Costa del Garraf is a resort that has excellent conditions for both adults and children, here you can use the services of a babysitter, there are playgrounds and various entertainment events are organized.

The Costa del Maresme is an area stretching from the Costa Brava almost to the city of Barcelona. It houses one of the largest in Spain, the Marineland Water Park(40,000 square meters), a zoo with rare species of marine animals and the Aquapolis water park with many attractions for children, including the state-of-the-art wave pool.

The climate of Spain

Despite the different climatic zones, the climate in Spain is considered temperate, typical of the Mediterranean. The average summer temperature is about 23°C - 29°C, in autumn - 10°C - 15°C, in winter - about 0°C, with the onset of spring - 0°C - 5°C. Precipitation is low - from three hundred to five hundred mm in the plains and the lowlands and up to a thousand mm per year in the mountains. The warmest climate is on the peninsula in the center and south of the country, cooler and more rainfall in northwestern Spain.

The best time for tourism is spring and the first half of autumn. On the coast, thanks to the sea, the climate is quite mild, the temperature even in winter does not fall below 10°C, and in summer it practically does not exceed 32°C.
