The island nature of the Azores

Geotourism plays a significant role in the economic development of the islands. The topography of the Azores is as unique as it gets and it draws nature enthusiasts who wish to explore the distinctive landscape. The Azores are a lot more than the former volcano craters; there are numerous cave systems, rocks and cliffs, geysers and hot springs.

One of the most interesting places to visit is the Capelinhos volcano which appeared from underwater in the 50s of the last century. This place provides the unique opportunity to enjoy the spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean, as well as to learn more than enough about the reason behind the islands’ existence – the movement of the tectonic plates and volcanic activity.

Do you know that there are natural wonders such as lava tubes? On Pico Mountain there is one which is also among the longest in the world – Gruta das Torres. It is similar to a cave, except that the underground geologic forms are made of lava!

Activities

Whale and dolphin watching are two of the activities for which this region is famous for. Throughout the whole year sperm whales and two types of dolphins play, fish and swim near the island shores. Blue whales often pass by on the migration routes.

Diving is another great way to explore the marine life of the islands. The Azores are considered as one of the most amazing diving locations in the world due to many environmental and situational factors of the water, including the clear visibility for more than 30 meters. Take the time for this adventure and have an unforgettable experience swimming with devil rays, turtles, lobsters and barracudas and many many more.

The weather conditions on the Azores are perfect for water sports – surfing, windsurfing, paddle boarding are just some of the adrenaline-boosting activities which you can practice here. Nevertheless, you can still enjoy a day of hiking! Mount Pico is the perfect spot as well as the highest mountain on the Azores. The best time to start is either before sunrise or sunset, in order to experience this remarkable natural phenomenon on the highest point in this part of the ocean.
