The nature of Abruzzo

As nature is so abundant in this Italian province, the amount of plant and animal species occupying it is also remarkable. On the premises of the protected areas, rare and endangered animals such as the golden eagle, the Abruzzo chamois, the Apennine wolf and the Marsican brown bean can roam freely enjoying the lush vegetation of the parks.

Undoubtedly, one of the more interesting places in the area is the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. Established in the beginning of the 19th century, the park has had huge importance for the Italian ecosystem, by preserving the animal species we previously mentioned.

In the heart of the park visitors come across Camosciara. This nature reserve is the most famous part of the park where numerous chamois live. The route to the reserve is an amazing adventure by itself, but when you actually arrive, the wild beauty of this place will amaze you. The Apennines surround the reserve, as if nature itself wants to protect it.

Calderone is a glacier located also in the Apennine Mountains, part of Gran Sasso d'Italia mountain range. This glacier lies just underneath the highest Apennine peak – Corno grande. This glacier is the second southernmost glacier, succeeded only by Snezhnika in Bulgaria’s mountain Pirin.

Activities

Hiking through the Apennines is an unforgettable experience. One of the more popular hiking trips represents a trip through the wolf territories and exploring the flora and fauna of the park. If you prefer something with a little bit more action, then you can try to hike the Monte Meta peak. For beautiful sceneries and a more laid back hike head to Lago Vivo and do the loop trail.

Are you looking for fun activities to take you out of the ordinary? You can try snow tubing in Pescasseroli or rafting along one of the rivers in the area. Scuba diving is also possible during the summer in the towns along the coastline. There is also a wake park near Manoppello Scalo.
