It is situated on the shore of former Zuiderzee, which was enclosed with a huge dam after a devastating flood in the early 1900s. There are four separate areas to discover: Oostvaardersplassen is the animal kingdom were horses, cattle and deer roam freely; Lepelaarplassen is a bird oasis, especially during the migrating period; Markermeer is a lake area popular for water sports with many suitable facilities; Marker Wadden is a group of islands in the Markermeer Lake, which are still being developed in order to create a habitat for birds and fish. The first island here is already open to visitors and includes a harbor and some walking routes as well as a beach.

If you, like us, cannot stop admiring the work and dedication of Dutch engineers in their battle with the sea, then definitely listen to Waterloopbos. This is a former test location for scaled down hydraulic projects. During the 1950s and 1960s most of the technology to be installed in the Dutch sea inlets and bays was tested here. Today you may wander through these woods and admire the outdated technology which has been largely reclaimed by the nature around it.
