De Alde Feanen is a unique area with a rich nature and cultural history, created from peat excavations. As many as 450 species of plants are found in the more than 4,000 acres of low moorland swamp, and more than 100 species of birds nest, including the bald eagle. The area is located in the heart of Fryslân, amid a number of picturesque villages, including Grou and not far from Leeuwarden, Drachten and Heerenveen. Explore the area by bicycle, boat or on foot. For example using the cycling and walking route 'the 8 of grou' also known as the Ferry Route. Do you like running or walking? Then cross a few hundred meters away with a ferry to the spectacular island 'De Burd' - nature development area, designed as meadow bird habitat and managed by It Fryske Gea.
