This nature house used to be a farm where people kept goats in a large chestnut forest where farmers picked chestnuts. The house is centuries old and is part of a hamlet of seven homes, Vigne Merle on the mountain slopes of the Cevennes in the municipality of St. Pierre/St. Jean. Large in area, but with few inhabitants. This house, suitable for up to six people, is comfortably furnished and also has contemporary amenities, such as a dishwasher, induction stove, microwave oven, and internet. The baker and the grocer disappeared from Vigne Merle years ago. For shopping you have to go to the larger towns in the area, such as Les Vans and Joyeuze. In the nature house are books, CDs, DVDs and records. It is a house where the owners themselves like to come and therefore it makes a lived-in impression, as if they themselves are away for a while.
Nature and surroundings
The surroundings are very peaceful. Ideal for short but also long walks. In the valleys streams and rivers gurgle. In the largest, the Sure, which runs alongside the property, natural pools have been carved into the rocks. In the densely wooded valleys you will encounter many species of birds and, outside the hunting season, perhaps a family of wild boar. Higher up in the Cévennes you will find plants and trees trying to maintain themselves in the cracks of the bare rocks. Besides the overwhelming nature, there is much more to discover: picturesque villages with austere churches built in the 10th and 11th centuries. Thick walls of limestone and often with roofs of thick slabs, lozes. The culturally rich cities of Nimes, Arles and Avignon can be reached by car in an hour and a half. Kayaks are rented in the area and museum trains run on a few old, abandoned train tracks. There are also museums of all shapes and sizes: from silkworm breeding to fine art. Everywhere you can eat good food at a reasonable price. There is a blue folder in the bookcase with addresses of restaurants where the hosts have eaten regularly.
