Flora

In total, the flora of Croatia numbers 4300 species, among which there are many endemics(703 species are characteristic only for the Dinaric Highlands, 103 - only for Croatia). The flora of some islands is especially rich: for example, 1,430 species have been recorded in the flora of the island of Krk, and 43 of them are endemic. The flora of the islands is less rich in that they receive less rainfall. Some islands are heavily forested. Thus, more than 70% of the area of Mljet Island is occupied by the Aleppo pine massif and evergreen oak forests. There are 764 species of red, brown and green algae in the Adriatic Sea.

Fauna

The fauna is characterized by less species diversity. In the mountain forests there are brown bears, forest cats, forest and stone martens, hares, foxes, wolves, deer, chamois, roe deer, and badgers. Lizards and snakes are characteristic of the treeless, well-warmed slopes of the Dinaric Highlands, and turtles are common in coastal areas.

The avifauna is diverse. Many breeding species. The most notable are the eagle, kite, falcon, wood grouse, partridge, stork, gulls and a number of waterfowl. There are many species of woodpeckers in the forests, incl. three-fingered, black (yellow), gray-haired, white-backed, large variegated, small variegated, verti-neck. A rare bird, the bald eagle, has survived on the island of Cres, and an isolated location of nutcracker, more common in the coniferous forests of Eastern Europe and Asia, is confined to the coniferous forests of the Velebit ridge. Particularly many birds are concentrated within the swampy landscapes at the confluence of the Drava and Danube. There are many commercial fish species in the Adriatic Sea. Of the aquatic mammals, the monk seal is characteristic.

What to do in Croatia?

In Croatia, the industry of extreme tourism and active recreation is developing intensively. It is not surprising that Croatia is traditionally famous for yachting - there are about five hundred harbors, fully equipped marinas with restaurants, spas, mini markets and weather maps for sailing and yachting lovers on its territory.

The Croatian Adriatic coast seems to be created for swimming - the sea is calm and warm, the water is surprisingly clear(up to transparency at a depth of several meters). There are special areas for swimming and bathing on the official beaches. There are no strong currents in the Adriatic Sea, and due to the low low tide, high waves are very rare.

Windsurfing enthusiasts are delighted with the intense movement of air masses on the coast, for whom nature itself has created excellent conditions for an unforgettable vacation. True connoisseurs of their craft have certainly heard about the ideal "Khvar Canal" separating Fr.Hvar and Fr Brač, where constant winds blow, amplified by natural conditions. Favorable circumstances for windsurfing in Croatia are formed by nature in Medulin, where there is an excellent surfing school, as well as in other coastal cities of the country, where you can easily do your favorite type of vacation by renting the necessary equipment.

Snorkeling and diving are on a par with windsurfing in Croatia. If snorkeling in Croatia can be enjoyed only along the shores of wonderful beaches, then diving in Croatia, including night diving, is possible in almost the entire water area of the Adriatic Sea. Experienced instructors from numerous Croatian diving schools will teach beginners the basics of scuba diving, and therefore the underwater world of the Adriatic is full of various sea sponges, corals and lush vegetation, among which cat sharks, barracudas, shoals of cod, sea eels, lobsters, anemones swim, will not remain an unsolved page ...

The excellent natural landscapes of the Balkan country beckon to make not only interesting, but also useful hiking, cycling and horseback riding in the surroundings of all resort towns. Some of the best trails for walking are the "Gorski kotar", which runs through the Istra forests and the hilly "Hrvatsko zagorje", which leads through the vineyards. However, horseback riding in Medulin, mountain hikes in Rabac, and hiking in the Paklenica and Risnjak National Parks are equally popular.

Fans of mountaineering and rock climbing will be able to take their souls away on Mount Platak, near Opatija, on the mountains around Basque, on the heights of about. Krk and Paklenica National Park.

Fishing in Croatia requires a permit. Fishing is possible throughout the Adriatic Sea, although there are some restrictions in the area of the national reserves of Kornati, Krka, Mljeta, etc.

Thrill-seekers will appreciate the fantastic caves in Mount Velebit - Tserovachsky Pechiny. Cerovac caves are a system that includes three speleological objects - Gornya Pechina (Upper Cave), located at a depth of 1250 meters, Donya Pechina (Lower Cave), which is a system of horizontally located halls and corridors at 2400 meters. In addition, there is also the Middle Pechina (Middle Cave), which looks like a cross between a cave and a pit. It is curious that the so-called "speleo diving" is gaining more and more popularity in Croatia, and in many caves, passages are found that connect them with other underground channels.
