Flora and Fauna

Cyprus is a fascinating site for nature lovers, with over 1,800 species of flowering plants. It is adequately isolated as an island to allow for the evolution of a significant endemic flowering element. At the same time, because it is surrounded by large continents, it absorbs floral elements from those continents.

About 8% of the island's native flora is endemic, with 125 different species and sub-species. The high number of endemics is due to the island's diverse ecosystems, which are linked to the island's variable microclimate and geology. Paphos' current fauna includes seven terrestrial animal species, 26 amphibian and reptile species, 357 bird species, and a wide range of insects and mites, while the island's coastal waters are home to 197 fish species as well as crabs, sponges, and Echinodermata.

The best things to do in Paphos

Paphos, which is home to Cyprus's second-largest international airport, is a popular tourist destination due to its mix of Mediterranean beaches and historical attractions, including three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. With so much to see and do, you'll never be stuck with things to do in the city. Swimming is permissible on the beach, and ascending to the top of the big rock provides spectacular panoramic views. To get to the beach, you must take a narrow, dark route that runs beneath the road and leads to the rock. The Kato Paphos Archaeological Park is home to an impressive collection of medieval ruins. These include sun-bleached remains of structures – nonetheless majestic despite the passage of time – mosaics, sculptures, and old statues of the Roman Empire.

The House of Aion, also known as the Ancient Odeon, is a remnant of Cyprus' regal heritage. Take advantage of your last-minute journey to this location. The picturesque Akamas Peninsula of Paphos has the exquisite Avakas Gorge, one of the remaining regions of the island to be untouched by contemporary construction. The gorge's tall rock formations were formed by a powerful river that swept continually over the limestone, gradually eroding it into 30-meter (100-foot) rocks. Spending a morning wandering through the gorge is a one-of-a-kind experience on the island, as there are few other places like it. The three-kilometer (two-mile) gorge can be wet and slick at times, so wear sturdy footwear.

Check out Blue Lagoon Beach, which offers some of Cyprus' bluest and cleanest waters, to make your last-minute trip to Paphos memorable. To get the most out of the gorgeous coastline, sea enthusiasts can combine a visit to the beach with a boat trip. Boat rides depart from Latchi's harbor, and some even include a souvla dinner as part of the package. Adventure seekers can drive down to the Blue Lagoon on a bumpy dirt road, but be aware that the path is not for the faint of heart and will require a large car.
