Explore the rich flora and fauna of the Veluwe

Veluwe is located in the province of Gelderland. Hiking trails spread on its more than 900 km² area. On the way you can climb on a watching tower and observe the stunning wildlife all around you; big animals like Scottish highlanders, red deer and boars. Watch them graze on the incredible plants that thrive there. Some of them are the sand sedge, heather spur and rough maidenhair. And flowers such as spotted orchid, hippeastrum and many others. Tall forest trees sprout from the hummus-rich soils reaching for the skies. Squirrells, foxes and rabbits patrol the area as well. For the sharper-eyed people, Veluwe is home to numerous species of birds. The most famous birdwatching spots are Polder Oosterwolde and IJssel Valley. Around Elburg’s bird watching hut you might encounter bearded reedling, kingfisher and water rail. A lot of our nature houses have their own gardens. Meaning you can enjoy fruit and veggies from your own garden.

The Veluwe is mostly forest, IJssel valley is an exception with the river piercing through the vast floodplains and grassy landscape. Thanks to this water rich area a lot of unique bird and plant species can be seen only there. Varying from reed buntings, grouse, red breasted wheat, ducks, egrets, grebes and black-tailed godwit. And at the edge where the tree line begins check out the hawks, kingfishers, nuthatches and woodpeckers. You can find many lakes around equipped with crystal clear waters and sandy beaches, perfect for a swim or maybe a calm and relaxing fishing day.

Things to do in Veluwe

If you want to come closer to experiencing the Dutch history you should visit one of the three Hanseatic cities around Veluwe. With Harderwijk being the most famous one for tourists, Hattem and Elburg are an amazing old city to check out. If Harderwijk is the city you choose be sure to visit the Marius van Dokkum Museum. Feast your eyes with the incredible paintings, still life and portrait paintings there. The food lovers will also enjoy their stay with the many restaurants for any taste and price. Apeldoorn is also not to be missed. Being called the capital of Veluwe, it has incredible culture, museum and for a nice night out – Theatre Orpheus. One of the best restaurants in the Netherlands is located there. For example, Restaurant De Kromme Dissel in Heelsum is receiving a Michelin star 48th year in a row.

Or maybe you prefer a more intimate and quieter romantic retreat with your partner. Enjoy each other in one of nature house's bungalows or tiny houses in the area. Take a relaxing hike or ride an electric scooter at The Hoge Veluwe National Park. There you will have the perfect opportunity of spotting an abundance of wildlife and amazing landscapes. Maybe take an extreme adventure and go zip sliding or mountain bike riding. Fill in a picnic basket with whatever you can find in the garden and chill on the golden sands of one of the few lakes there.

What to expect from the weather in Veluwe

The weather of Western Europe has its fair share of rainy days, but due to Veluwe being so inland, springtime is dry and sunny. With temperatures going between 15-25°C and reaching up to 8-9 hours of sunshine. Winds in the area never exceed more than 20 km/h. Many tourists choose spring because you can watch the forest bringing back its bright green color or the different species of birds coming back to their old nests, ready to start preparing the next generation for the long flight waiting for them when winter comes.

Speaking of winter, it’s the most mind-blowing season. All the roads and hiking paths turn white like in a fairy tale. Temperatures range from 0-10°C. And when night comes, what better than congratulating yourself for finding this dreamlike house in the last minute with a glass of red wine near the fireplace.

Every summer the Netherlands gets hit with a heat wave for a week or two. I’d advise you to take shelter or cool off in a pool or lake, because it can get hotter than 38°C in that period.

And last but not least comes autumn. The most colorful season for a gateway in nature. Witness the reddish falling leaves cover the forest floor like a magnificent carpet. Besides getting colder, autumn brings heavy rains with it. Either with a swimsuit on a sandy beach or with a thick jacket in the forest, it is guaranteed that your last-minute vacation will be unforgettable.
