Log cabins Holland
Despite lacking many of the geographical features most of us are used to, such as mountains and coastal cliffs, the Netherlands still has remarkable nature for us to enjoy! The western parts of the country are known as Holland – a maritime region, which braves the power of the North Sea. Many rivers, lakes and inland canals cross the region. As most of the territory is below sea level, an extensive coastal dune line protects it from the sea. Holland is an important area of the country, housing three of its most important cities – Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague.
While most parts of the region are mainly urban, the nature surrounding them is truly spectacular and worth seeing. You can have an amazing Dutch experience in nature by booking one of the log cabins in the Holland region. Staying in a log cabin is an authentic way to enjoy the landscape and feel united with it. The log cabins are equipped in a contemporary manner to ensure your comfort and the hosts will gladly give you advice on what to see and do in the area.
Explore the nature
Two of the biggest European rivers – the Meuse and the Rhine – flow through Holland. Their estuaries create a tidal zone of freshwater, which has been turned into a national park. Biesbosch is an important conservation area crossed by numerous streams and swamps and covered in willow forests. This national park is highly affected by the fluctuation in the two rivers’ water flow. However, this fluctuation used to be much greater in the past than now, after the construction of the Delta Works.
Another natural wonder in the region, located near Utrecht is the Heuvelrug National Park, where you will encounter a distinctive geological form – a glacial ridge. After the last Ice Age, this park was created by natural forces, however time has changed it considerably as sand and water have worked their way through the landscape. The Netherlands is not famous for having too many forests, however in Heuvelrug you will find one of the biggest – almost completely consisting of oaks and beeches. Of course, by providing shelter from the harsh rain and winds of Holland, this forest has given home to many animal and bird species, such as badgers and the rare black woodpecker.
Activities
As the Holland region is below sea level, drainage has always been of utmost importance for locals. In the past windmills were mainly used for this purpose, which is why even today you can see these buildings practically anywhere across the region. The Windmill Trail is a great way to see as many windmills as possible. Take a bike and enjoy the bank of river Vecht with its picturesque towns, local farms, windmills and villas.
Nearby Amsterdam, a small and unique village has become quite popular among tourists. Giethoorn is a small picturesque village with an unseen landscape. This village is car-free, known as Venice of the North. You can explore it on a kayak or whisper boat and enjoy the great views from the water.
