Nature to discover

If you prefer to explore a mountainous region, then head to Spain and visit Picos de Europa. This remarkable national park in the Cantabrian Mountains is made out of a karst rock system carved for thousands of years by the elements. As well as presenting a remarkable landscape, this area is also home to an emblematic ecosystem of plants and animal species, typical for Spain such as the Iberian wolf. The interesting fact for this natural reserve is that it is the only one which is populated: local people live a sweet life of tranquility, while huge peaks hang over their picturesque village houses.

For those who cherish time spent near water, Austria is the place to be. The country is home to so many lakes! We suggest you visit Gosausee – a small lake with spectacular views loved by photographers from all around the world. Moreover, the Blautopf Lake in Germany is another must-see. It is located in South Germany and is the source of the Blau river. Many people are drawn here by the vivid color of the water. A bunch of mythical legends about this place are also available; for example, many people believe that the depth of the lake cannot be measured because nixes live inside its waters and steal all tools ever used to try and measure it.

Activities

During wintertime you can go skiing in one of the many ski resorts in Germany – Zugspitze, Garmisch Classic, Nebelhorn and Todtnau, with Todtnau being the oldest one. These resorts are just as beautiful as those in the Alps, however they tend to have less crowds.

For hikers, the Painters’ Way is a popular trail to take. It will take you through the Elbe Sandstone rock formations, where you will be presented with amazing views of the German countryside and the wilder side of its nature.

In Spain, every national park, natural reserve or simply a natural area provides a lot of possibilities for active discovery of Spain. National parks have an established route system, suitable for hikers of all levels, while the provinces of Catalonia, Aragon and Andalusia entertain visitors to their winter ski resorts during the winter months.

Last but not least, if you want to admire the Spanish nature from a slightly different perspective, head to Valencia and visit the local biopark. You will not only learn a lot about numerous wild animal species, but you will get a chance for close interactions with them such as feeding a gorilla.
